R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

Let’s take a hot minute and talk about respecting other people. This seems like one the most basic fundamental lessons we should learn as humans, but a lot of folks seem to have missed it.

Everyone deserves respect because they’re a human being. That’s pretty much all there is to it, although this simple thought often appears to escape the mind of the general populace.

In my eyes, respect means that you treat someone politely and with kindness. You don’t have to like a person to treat them respectfully. You don’t have to consider them your “equal”, even though frankly everyone is your equal in terms of their value as a person. You are not better than someone because you went to college and they didn’t. You are not better than someone because you have a family and they don’t. You are not better than someone because you’re the one ordering food and they are the one taking your order. The fact that someone is “working” for you does not entitle you to treat them like shit. It never will.

I suppose I just don’t understand what makes people think it’s okay to scream and yell and treat another person like dirt. Isn’t it as simple as the golden rule? Treat someone how you want to be treated. I’m embarrassed enough if I find myself out with someone who doesn’t say please and thank you to the waitress, let alone someone who has the gaul to be outright rude.

There’s really no point to this little rant except that the world would be a heck of a lot nicer if everyone was just respectful to everyone else. It’s not always easy, and it doesn’t always solve things, but hell.

It wouldn’t kill us to try.
